Marinus Gutteling

Marinus “Martin” Gutteling, 93, of Keaau died Nov. 5, 2013, at home. Born April 8, 1920, in Buitenzorg (Bogor), Java, Dutch East Indies, he was a retired architect, served in the Dutch resistance and was a member of the American Institute of Architects, the Royal Institute of British Architects and the Pahoa Chess Club.

Friends may call at 8 a.m. Nov. 16 at Pahoa Sacred Heart Catholic Church for a service. A celebration of life will follow. Family requests casual attire be worn.

He is survived by daughters, Fran Gutteling of East Preston, England, Alice Illingworth of Sebastopol, Calif.; son, Edward Gutteling of Hilo; three grandchildren; two nephews; two nieces; one grandniece; three grandnephews.

Brandon Javellana

Brandon Anthony Kalani “Java” Javellana, 28, of Pahoa died Oct. 26, 2013, at Hilo Medical Center. Born in Honolulu, he was a Navy veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom.

Friends may call at 10 a.m. Nov. 16 at New Hope Christian Fellowship in Hilo for an 11 a.m. service. A committal service will be held at 9 a.m. Nov. 18 at Hawaii Veterans Cemetery No. 2. Family requests casual attire be worn and no flowers.

He is survived by parents, Clifford (Dawn) Javellana of Pahoa; mother, Joan Javellana of Hilo; sister, Nohelani Javellana of Pahoa; stepsister, Erica Paredes of Oahu; stepbrothers, Aaron (Codi) Paredes of Oahu, Shane Paredes of Pahoa; grandfather, Louis Furtado of Honolulu; grandmother, Ethel Furtado of Eugene, Ore.; stepgrandmother, Evelyn Stanley-Lovett of Keaau; numerous uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces and nephews.

John Padilla

John Valdez Padilla, 47, of Mountain View died Sept. 22, 2013, in Houston. Born in the Philippines, he was employed by the state Highways Division, was a journeyman carpenter and member of the Jehovah’s Witnesses.

Friends may call at 3 p.m. Nov. 16 at Dodo Mortuary chapel for a 4 p.m. service. Family requests casual attire be worn and no flowers.

He is survived by wife, Jodie Padilla of Mountain View; daughter, Sophie (David) Lara of Palm Springs, Calif.; sons, Keoni Padilla and Joshua Padilla both of Houston; sisters, Rudilia Agpoon of Hilo, Elvira (Nicanor) Uy of Las Vegas, Josefina Padilla of New York, Arcadia (Roy) Kuahuia of Kurtistown; brothers, Dominador (Laura) Padilla of Hilo, Ruben (Tessie) Padilla of Hawaiian Beaches, Juan (Marie) Padilla of Kauai, Romeo (Jonnette) Padilla of Mountain View; one grandson; numerous nieces and nephews.

Lovely Vea

Lovely Blossom Puanani Vea, 72, of North Kohala died Oct. 30, 2013, at The Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu. Born Feb. 10, 1941, in Kohala, she was retired from the Hawaii Community Federal Credit Union, Kohala Branch and member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Friends may call at 9 a.m. Nov. 16 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Kohala Ward, for an 11 a.m. service. Burial is at Hawi County Cemetery. Family requests casual attire be worn.

She is survived by husband, Ika Vea Sr. of Kohala; daughters, Martha Naihe of Kohala, Neilani (Thomas) Chittenden of Hilo; sons, Kevin (Annie) Vea of Fairfield, Calif., Michael (Mickey) Vea of Kohala, Monty (Suzette) Vea of St. George, Utah, Ika (Linda) Vea Jr. of Kona; brothers, Joseph (Shon) Pule Jr. of Bland, Mo., George Pule and John Pule, both of Kohala, Alden (Lana) Pule Sr. of Aiea, Oahu, Eric (Gabrielene) Pule Sr. of Waianae, Oahu, Raymond Pule of Spokane, Wash., Albert Pule Sr. of Hilo, Claude (Charlotte) Pule of Molokai; sister, Sharon Pule of Kohala; 11 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one great-aunt; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
